2019 Young Artist Competition

The Society of American Musicians cordially invites young artists currently residing in the United States, under the age of 22, as of November 15, 2018 to participate in the Young Artist Competition for Cello, Flute, Guitar, Piano, Viola and Violin.  Applicants are eligible to participate if they have not yet completed their undergraduate degree.

All repertoire must be memorized unless indicated otherwise.

2019 REPERTOIRE


CELLO

  • J.S. Bach: Sarabande from Any Cello Suite (No Repeats)
  • 1st movement of a concerto: Dvorak, Elgar, Haydn C or D, Lalo,  Saint-Saens, Schumann, or Shostakovich
  • Select one virtuoso piece from the following:
    • Popper: Spinning Song or Elfentanz
    • Paganini: Moto Perpetuo
    • Faure: Papillons
    • Boccherini: Sonata L’Imperatrice
    • Piatti: Caprices Op. 25
    • Popper: Etudes
    • Davidoff: At the Fountain
    • Tchaikovsky: Pezzo Capricioso

FLUTE

  • W.A. Mozart: Concerto in G Major  (1st mvt- exposition only) MEMORIZED (Urtext)
  • F. Donjon: Elegie from Salon Etude MEMORIZATION OPTIONAL (IMSLP)
  • Paul Taffanel: Andante Pastoral & Scherzettino from French Composers (G. Schirmer) MEMORIZATION OPTIONAL

GUITAR

  • Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco: I. Francisco de Goya y Lucientes, Pintor from 24 Caprichos de Goya, Op. 195
  • Any contrasting piece of your choice, not exceeding 8 minutes
  • ALSO SELECT ONE OF THE FOLLOWING WORKS
    • Heitor Villa-Lobos: Select One of the 12 Etudes
    • Disonisio Aguando: Select One of the Three Rondo Brilliantes
    • Manuel Ponce: Select One movement from any Sonata

PIANO

  • J.S. Bach: Any Prelude & Fugue from Well-Tempered Clavier Book I or II
  • First movement of a Sonata by Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, or Schubert
  • Any work by Chopin, Liszt, or Schumann (not exceeding 6 minutes)
  • A contemporary work composed after 1950

VIOLA

  • J.S. Bach: 1st movement from any Bach Cello Suite
  • First  Movement of a Major Concerto (i.e. Hoffmeister, Vanhal, Stamitz, Walton or Bartok)

VIOLIN

  • J.S. Bach:1st movement from any Violin Solo Sonata or Partita
  • First movement of any major Concerto
  • Kreisler: Recitative & Scherzo
