2019 REPERTOIRE

Please determine the appropriate division according to your age as of November 15, 2018.

All repertoire must be memorized unless indicated otherwise.

Unless specified in the repertoire requirements, no repeats are to be taken. However D.C. & D.S. should be taken.  When specific editions are recommended, participants must use those editions. If no edition is listed, please use modern editions, avoiding heavily edited editions.

CELLO

PRIMARY (Age 10 and under)

  • Michael Rose: Valse from Starters for Cello (ABRSM)
  • C. Webster: Scherzo (Take Repeat) from Suzuki Book 3 (Alfred)

JUNIOR (Age 13 and under)

  • James MacMillan: Sabre Dance  from Northern Skies (Boosey & Hawkes)
  • B. Marcello: Sonata no.2 in e minor: III. Largo ONLY (International Edition)

INTERMEDIATE (Age 16 and under) 

  • Faure: Elegie
  • Van Goens: Scherzo Op. 12  (Suzuki Book 8, International, Hamelle & Cie, United Music Publishers)

YOUNG ARTIST (Age 22 and under)  Applicants are eligible to participate if they have not yet completed their undergraduate degree. 

  • J.S. Bach: Sarabande from Any Cello Suite (No Repeats)
  • 1st movement of a concerto: Dvorak, Elgar, Haydn C or D, Lalo,  Saint-Saens, Schumann, or Shostakovich
  • Select one virtuoso piece from the following:
    • Popper: Spinning Song or Elfentanz
    • Paganini: Moto Perpetuo
    • Faure: Papillons
    • Boccherini: Sonata L’Imperatrice
    • Piatti: Caprices
    • Popper: Eudges
    • Davidoff: At the Fountain
    • Tchaikovsky: Pezzo Capricioso

FLUTE

JUNIOR (Age 13 and under)

  • G.F. Handel: Giga (No repeats) MEMORIZED (Concert & Contest by H. Voxman)
  • Saint-Saens: The Swan (Carl Fischer: 36 Repertoire Pieces edited by Donald Peck)   MEMORIZATION OPTIONAL

INTERMEDIATE (Age 16 and under)

SENIOR (Age 18 and under)

  • Any contrasting piece of your choice, not exceeding 8 minutes

PIANO

PRIMARY (Age 10 and under)

  • Gretchaninoff: Autumn Chant (Music for Millions V. 27)
  • Prokofiev: Tarentella (Music for Millions V. 17)

JUNIOR (Age 13 and under)

  • J.S. Bach: Prelude no.6 in d minor, BWV 851(Henle)
  • Mozart: Sonata in C Major, K. 545: III. Rondo (No repeats)
  • Prokofiev: Waltz Op. 65 no.6 from Music for Children

INTERMEDIATE (Age 16 and under)

  • J.S. Bach: Gigue from French Suite no.5 in G Major (Henle)
  • SELECT ONE OF THE FOLLOWING WORKS
    • Mozart: Sonata in D Major, K. 311 – I. Allegro con spirito

YOUNG ARTIST (Age 22 and under) Applicants are eligible to participate if they have not yet completed their undergraduate degree. 

  • J.S. Bach: Any Prelude & Fugue from Well-Tempered Clavier Book I or II
  • First movement of a Sonata by Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, or Schubert
  • Any work by Chopin, Liszt, or Schumann (not exceeding 6 minutes)
  • A contemporary work composed after 1950 

VIOLA

YOUNG ARTIST (Age 22 and under) Applicants are eligible to participate if they have not yet completed their undergraduate degree. 

  • J.S. Bach: 1st movement from any Bach Cello Suite
  • First  Movement of a Major Concerto (i.e. Hoffmeister, Vanhal, Stamitz, Walton or Bartok)

VIOLIN

PRIMARY (Age 10 and under) 

  • Ludwig Mendelssohn: Mosquito Dance
  • Vivaldi: Concerto in a minor II. Largo

JUNIOR (Age 13 and under)

  • Handel: Sonata in D Major #4: I. Affetuoso
  • Barok: Romanian Dance: VI. Maruntel

INTERMEDIATE (Age 16 and under)  

  • Beethoven: “Spring” Sonata no.5 in F Major: I. Allegro MEMORIZATION OPTIONAL 
  • Kreisler: Tambourin Chinois

YOUNG ARTIST (Age 22 and under) Applicants are eligible to participate if they have not yet completed their undergraduate degree. 

  • J.S. Bach: 1st movement from any Violin Solo Sonata or Partita
  • First movement of any major Concerto 
  • Kreisler: Recitative & Scherzo
