2017 Young Artist Competition

The Society of American Musicians cordially invites young artists currently residing in the United States, under the age of 22, to participate in the Young Artist Competition for Cello, Flute, Guitar, Piano, Viola and Violin. Applicants are allowed to participate as long as they have not have completed an undergraduate degree.

All repertoire must be memorized unless indicated otherwise.


CELLO

  • J.S. Bach: Sarabande from any Bach Cello Suite no.5 (with repeats)
  • A virtuosic piece, Popper Etude, or Piatti Caprice not exceeding 5 minutes
  • One movement of a concerto from the standard repertoire such as Dvorak, Schumann, Haydn C or D, Lalo, Shostakovich, Elgar or  Saint-Saens.

FLUTE

  • Claude Debussy: Syrinx MEMORIZED
  • W.A. Mozart: Concerto in G Major or D Major (1st movement – exposition) MEMORIZED
  • ALSO SELECT ONE OF THE FOLLOWING WORKS (MEMORIZATION OPTIONAL)
    • Sergei Prokofiev: Sonata in D Major (4th movement)
    • Eldin Burton: Sonatine (3rd movement)     

GUITAR

  • Joaquin Rodrigo: En Los Trigales
  • Any contrasting piece of your choice, not exceeding 7 minutes
  • ALSO SELECT ONE OF THE FOLLOWING WORKS
    • Heitor Villa-Lobos: Select One of the 12 Etudes
    • Disonisio Aguando: Select One of the Three Rondo Brilliantes
    • Manuel Ponce: Select One movement from any Sonata

PIANO

  • Prelude & Fugue from J.S. Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier Book I or II
  • First movement of a Sonata by Haydn, Mozart, or Beethoven
  • Any work by Chopin, Liszt, or Brahms (not exceeding 7 minutes)
  • Dmitri Kabalevsky: Prelude in D minor, Op. 38 no. 24

VIOLA

  • J.S. Bach: 1st movement from any Bach solo suite (originally for cello) or sonata (originally for violin)
  • lan Hovhaness:  Chahagir Viola Solo,  Op.56 A
  • Final  Movement of a Major Concerto (i.e. Hoffmeister, Vanhal, Stamitz, Walton or Bartok)

VIOLIN

  • J.S. Bach: 1st movement from any Violin Solo Sonata or Partita
  • Paganini: Caprice #13
  • First movement of any major Concerto
